Surplus ammo cans

Anyone know what the deal is with surplus ammo cans? I used to be able to get the 50 cal. cans all day long for $5 each and the 30 cal. cans for $3. SAW cans were $8. Gun shows had these things all over the place as little as a year ago. Now I can hardly find them and when I do the prices are way out of hand. Is the gov. scraping them instead? Anyone else seeing this in their area?

Gerry cans are out they got plastic ones now as for the ammo cans

1. Way more people are storring up ammo
2. Most of the troops are overseas not training here and using up ammo so theres a lot less surplus
3.More civilian buyers at the auctions guys buying a pallet and then selling it on craigs list

You may want to consider these or something like them. I have been getting the MTM Dry Boxes however...

I thought they were being discontinued.

I've read that the ammo cans are being scrapped. Vented jerry cans are supposedly no longer legal.

How do the plastic cases hold up? I know that an ammo can full of 45 ACP weighs quite a bit, and I would be worried about the handles falling off on a plastic case.

Are they durable enough that weight is not an issue?

Get em' by the truckload Government Liquidators .

I see them/obtain them all the time out of Eglin AFB DRMO for official purposes.

No, I can't sell them.

ArmyGear.net

There was a group buy on another forum and they used these guys as the vendor. IIRC there were over 500 cans on four palletts. They'll work with you on the price per can (Over 200 can order) and on the shipping as well. These cans do have splotches of paint on them. Most of them arrived in very good condition, the cans on the top pf the palletts had a few minor dings but nothing was so damaged they couldn't be used.

It helps if you have a loading dock and at least a pallett jack for delivery.
The other forum did some kind of a FTF delivery/distribution once the cans arrived. Pricing worked out to around seven bucks each. Delivered.

Re: Surplus ammo cans

At a recent gun show I was able to purchase some pristine milsurp 5.56 and 7.62 cans, and I talked with the proprietor, who has been re-selling mil-surp items as his primary vocation for over 30 years.

He told me that more and more cans are being filled with rocks upon first emptying, thus causing rust from the moisture in the rocks (I knew this from when I was active Army back in the 80s).

This artificial "shortage" of good (rust-free) ammo cans has been going on for over 20 years, and therefore $5 FRNs for a good ammo can is very reasonable.

It is only the resourceful folks within and without the .mil complex who can provide pristine ammo cans, and IMO, they should be compensated accordingly.

They have just about everything, but you're going to pay for it...

(I've been to their place...they'll actually sell you a surplus bridge if you need one...)

I had the same fear

But Cabelas will give you high quality(plastic) ammo dry boxes that I have had no complaints out of thus far.

But I will always defer to a fat can if I can find them.

These are pretty nice for storage and range box.If you happen to live around one of there outlets, you can land em for less then half the asking price.

Small one holds 500 rounds(in boxes)of .45ACP fine. Not including the removable tray.Another six boxes could go in the tray.No issue with handles so far.
